The history of KIT's predecessor institutions goes back a long way.

 

University of Karlsruhe (TH)

1800 Foundation of the Karlsruhe School of Civil Engineering by Friedrich Weinbrenner

1807 Foundation of the Karlsruhe School of Engineering by Johann Gottfried Tulla

 

Foundation

1825 Foundation of the Polytechnical School modeled on the École Polytechnique in Paris

1885 Technical College

1902 Name suffix "Fridericiana" after its patron Grand Duke Friedrich von Baden

(Campus is located on the former hunting grounds of the Grand Duke)

1967 Renamed the University of Karlsruhe (TH)

2005 Name affix "Research University founded in 1825"

 

 

Karlsruhe Research Center GmbH

1956 Founded as a company for the construction and operation of nuclear reactors by the Federal Minister for Nuclear Affairs

1963 Renamed the Society for Nuclear Research Karlsruhe

1978 Renamed Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH (KfK)

1995 Diversification and renaming to Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH - Technology and Environment

2002 New name affix "Member of the Helmholtz Association"
